Anil Swarup is a distinguished former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, author and public-policy practitioner whose civil-service career spanned 38 years. He joined the IAS in 1981 after serving for a year in the Indian Police Service. He also received the Director’s Gold Medal for Best Officer Trainee at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. During his career, Anil Swarup held several important positions in both the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India. In his later years of service, he served as Secretary, Ministry of Coal, and subsequently as Secretary, School Education and Literacy, Government of India. A postgraduate in Political Science from Allahabad University, Swarup was awarded the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for Best All-Round Student. His extensive experience in administration, governance and public policy has provided the foundation for his writing on the realities and challenges of India’s civil services. He is also the Founder Chairman of Nexus of Good, an initiative focused on recognising and encouraging positive action in society.
