Kamala Das

Recognised as one of Indias foremost women writers, Kamala Das authored many autobiographical works, novels, collections of poetry, short stories, and essays on varied subjects. Das, who is considered an important voice of her generation, exemplified by breaking away from the traditions. Her poems are known for their bold and candid treatment of the self and female sexuality, womens role in Indian society, urban life, and struggle of marginalised people. For her literary contribution, Das received many national and international awards including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985. She was also nominated for Nobel Prize in Literature in 1984.
